Why Donate Your horse?
Protect it as well as get a tax deduction!

What to do?

There is an easy safe way to make sure that your horse finds a good home and won't go to the auction sales floor, or worse. You can donate your horse to The Last Straw Horse Rescue & Sanctuary.

What does L.S.H.R.S do?

We are dedicated to finding a life long home for your beloved friend. Each potential adopter is required to fill out our application, which we then process to make sure the adopter is qualified to care for the horse. Once adopted, LSHRS retains ownership of the horse, making certain that your donated horse is well cared for.

What will we guarantee?

If you are in the racing industry, we guarantee that your former horse will never be raced again. For your pleasure or show horse, we will ensure to the best of our ability that your horse will be loved and cared for, for the rest of it's natural life.

How is my donated horse going to be protected?

Each spring every adopter is required to send in a spring Health Report form which is filled out and signed by the adopter's veterinarian. This form states which vaccinations the horse has been given, dates of trimming, worming and dental work and also states the overall health and condition of the animal. LSHRS does a 30-day visit for ALL horses for a 12-month period. After the probation period is successfully completed, permanent adoption papers shall be issued.

Any time the adopter is unable to care for their horse, horses are to be returned to the LSHRS.
Over the years I have seen so much pain and suffering of horses who have done nothing but give to their human counter parts.  We've decided to do what ever we can to help!  We are far from rich, and in our retirement years, we are determined to do what ever it takes to help in any way we can.

Our name is The Last Straw Horse Rescue and Sanctuary, we are a incorporated 501 (3)(c) non-profit org.  Our By-Laws are very different then many of the Rescues out there, in my researches I have found many who have done so much to help!  But then I've come across more that are in it only to line their pockets!  This makes me so sick, I think there should be some way to change the laws to stop all this scamming.

The Last Straw NEVER sells their horses, horses that can be rehabilitated and are able to leave the Sanctuary, are matched with their forever partner, adoption is free of charge.  The new owner with have to successfully complete a 6 week care, feeding and basic horsemanship course, for first time owners.  A three week brush up course for adopters with previous horse experience.  After the new facilities are inspected, and deemed safe, horse will be delivered and the 12 month probation period will begin.  Adoption will be finalized upon successful completion.  At anytime the new owner is unable to provide for their horse it is to be returned to The Last Straw.

We also have a program for those good horse people out there, that because of the economy need help, to keep from losing their beloved friends.  Care, feed, even boarding plans available.  To be determined by the applicant's needs. We are here to help, if you or know of a horse or owner needing help, please let us know. For future reference, our non profit donations, proceeds etc. are given 100% directly to the horses
